Building New Hope

Restoration Project

Full Brouchure

The restoration project is about rebuilding and preserving the history and Legacy

  • When it all started

Founded in 1872 by Wash Weaver, Moad Reid, Eliza Weaver, Sallie Williams, Jack Francis, Lizzie Weaver, Abe Dozier, Judy Weaver, Charlie Woodward, Becky Crow, Eliza Williams, Lizzie Woodward and others.

We all benefit from their past contributions in government,

law, social custom, religion, etc. It helps to know about the riches that have been passed on to us, how they began, how

they developed, and how they served the past and present.

We can best serve the present if we know and use the wisdom of the past. One of the principal ideas you should get from this is thatthe roots of our church extend as far back as 1872. Even before then, men were concerned about a place, a building where redeemed persons could meet and bind together with fellow Christians to worship and glorify God. Christians find spiritual strength and direction through fellowship

    with others.

Accomplishments that have been made in these One Hundred and Fifty-two years were not the result of wishful

thinking. It has taken hard work, conscientious effort and devotion to an ideal to insure the success that has been

    made.

It is with the foundation of this church that the newer New Hope Missionary Baptist Church was built.

  • What are we about

Mission: To preserve the history and legacy of the New Hope Missionary  Baptist  Church.  To  collect,  record,  preserve  and display,  at  a  place  where  it  all  began  for  the  public  viewing, education and worshiping. The collection of photographs, and artifacts, capturing  the  unique  history  of  African  American culture and experiences of the church  since its founding from 1872 and beyond.

    Location:

An   active   church,   the   Old   New   Hope   Missionary   Baptist Church  building,  located  at  810  Church  Ave.,  is  adjacent  to the  Jacksonville  Cemetery  of  the  Eastwood  community.

It  is one mile south east of the old Eastwood High School, formerly Jacksonville  Colored  School

for  segregated  Black  residents between 1941-1968.

    Acquisition:

New Hope Missionary Baptist Church is  seeking materials for display. This phase of the program is to seek specific material from an era of family and community growth. Items include but are not limited to: photographs, diaries, personal and military objects,  and  other  materials  that  reflects  the  lives,  actions, and  memories  of  church  involvement  and  growth.

Items  that spanned the specific years of 1872, through the civil rights era are requested for this phase.

We  also  seek  financial  contributions  to  continue  restoring and preserving this historic building.   Donations can be done anytime through our cash app or in person during any of our main church services building fund collections.

Currently,  through  our  church  website  (nhmbc1872.org)  we host a library of past church anniversary journal books which contain  images  of  church  activities  and  history  of  the church growth and is free to the public.

  • A Landmark Place of History

In addition to our primary mission, another role of the church is to provide a place and space for the community to come together, learn and enjoy the spiritual service. As well as taking the time to relish the displayed memories of the past and show how these  experiences influenced events of today. We hope you will help in our goal to show today’s public this significant part of history and what it means to the

    next generation.
